One of our most popular features is Trees + Technology, an overview of communication strategies developed by municipalities and nonprofits to broadcast the benefits of trees.

Stay tuned for links to our various series including Tree Walk, Then & Now, and essays about Washington Square Park and the Washington Square/Greenwich Village neighborhood.

If you need a book recommendation, visit our bookshop The Printed Leaf.

Local ecologist blog is one of several projects managed by localecology.org.  The other projects are Nature-making, the Ecological Street Tree, and Eat Street Trees!

  • Learn about the nature making project [pdf] at localecology.org. Nature-made sites are strategically designed to produce ecosystem services in neighborhoods and cities. What are ecosystem services? Wildlife habitat, heat island reduction, clean air, stormwater management, and carbon sequestration. Do you manage or know of a nature-made site? Complete the Nature-made Site Information Form.
  • Trees by their nature provide environmental benefits however these benefits have not always been formally and systematically recognized in policy documents.  Research on the Ecological Street Tree examines the transformation in the role of the street tree from one of beautification and ornamentation to one more inclusive of environmental services.
